What a doctor from Vienna taught me about screens.

I watched an interview

I watched an interview a few weeks ago. A paediatrician in Vienna — I won't use his name here but he knows who he is and he'll read this — was being asked about screen time recommendations for children. I expected the usual answer: the two-hour rule, the no-screens-before-two rule, the familiar scaffolding of recommendations that always sounds reasonable and is almost impossible to implement in a real family.

He didn't say any of that. What he said was: the question is not how much. The question is what kind, and with whom.

I've thought about that framing almost every day since. Not how much. What kind. With whom.

Because the way most parents — me included — think about screen time is almost entirely quantitative. We think in minutes. We think in hours. We think about the number on a parental controls timer and whether it's too high or too low. We treat screen time as a substance to be measured out in doses.

But a screen is not a substance. It's a context.

The reframe matters. Not how much — what kind and with whom. This is not a more permissive version of the same advice. It's a different question entirely. The parent who asks 'how much screen time should my child have?' is measuring a substance. The parent who asks 'what kind of screen use is this, and is my child alone?' is making an assessment. The second question is harder to answer. It's also more honest.
